The careers in agriculture are very important as it is related to the growth and economy of the country. One of the greatest accomplishments in our country post independence is the sustenance of food production. This accomplishment is noteworthy because the population has grown several times more but the technology of food production kept in pace and matched the population growth. If our land, forest, water, wildlife and animal resources are not properly fostered, then our country’s economy will be severely hampered. India is primarily an agricultural country and our land resources are overstrained by wastelands which are created by air and water pollution.

In our country, the agriculture sector is mostly privately owned though the distribution of food grains are done through governmental agencies. The landowners, farmers, agriculturists, scientists, resources and extension workers play a pivotal role in the development of this sector. Crop farming and poultry farming are primarily owned by private concerns. Dairy and milk related products are handled through government owned agencies and boards. All these sectors offer employment opportunities to the agriculture graduates. The forest department recruits officers through UPSC for IFS.

Agriculture sector offers variety of jobs like farm workers, scientists and researchers, marketing professionals, government jobs and non-governmental agency jobs. Agencies that work for the protection of environmental resources and agricultural industry also offer employment to agriculture graduates. They are even employed in financial and banking sector and even in journalism. Though the job requirement may vary depending on the type of job they are in, they should always give importance to plants, food production, environment and wildlife.

The farmer, horticulturists and poultry farmers require physical stamina and hand work. Researchers and scientists require logical, inquisition and scientific aptitude for their work. Passion towards nature and plants and animals are essentials for any agriculture aspirant. Excellent mental capacity and scientific disposition are the basic requirements for agricultural professionals.
