Agriculture And Allied Fields
This is related to careers vital to the growth and economy of the country. The greatest achievement of our country in the post independence period has been self sustenance in food. With a population which has increased many times over the last few decades this achievement is indeed remarkable. Our country?s economy will however be severely threatened if the land, water, forest, wildlife and animal resources are not adequately nurtured and preserved. Indian?s largely agrarian country land is critically overstrained with wasteland areas under constant threat and the atmosphere and water resources facing severe environmental pollution.
Industry Profile
The agriculture sector is largely privately owned through the distribution of food grains in carried out through governmental agencies. Landowners, farmers, agriculturists, scientists, resource and extension workers form the backbone of this industry. Large government spending on this sector has brought about rapid changes and improved farming procedures resulting in better yields. The sector is greatly dependent on the work of agricultural scientists working with research agencies.
Entry and Career Progression
Study in the fields at graduate level is generally followed by post graduation. Scientists are employed by government bodies promoting research in the sector. Department of agriculture in every state, the Indian council for agriculture research, institute for horticulture research are some of the organizations offering employment. Crop farming and poultry farming is largely owned by private entrepreneurs. Dairying, managed through cooperatives and development boards, offer job opportunities for work. The forest department is government owned and recruits officers through UPSC for IFS while state government also recruits other staff.
Aptitudes, Interests and Personal Qualities
There are a variety of jobs e.g. job of farm workers, scientists and researchers marketing professionals, jobs with the government and with no government agencies which are working for the protection of environmental resources and with industries. In the financial and banking sector and even in journalism. The requirement of the job may vary but professions working in the area of agriculture must have a concern for plants/food stuff/environment/animals and birds etc. physical stamina and working with hands is required by a farmer, horticulturists, poultry formers etc. research jobs require a logical, inquisitive and scientific bent of mind. Love for nature, flora and fauna should be intrinsic. Good mental ability and scientific temperament are assets in these professions.
