Computers and Information Technology



Computers can be classified into four groups- super, mainframe, mini and micro. The classification of computers is done on the basis computing power, processing capability, speed, amount of memory and to an extent the number of input and output devices. Private and public sector enterprises are using super and mainframe computers for a range of jobs. Small computer units are installed in retail units and are used in publishing, advertising, newspaper offices, in banks, by chartered accountants, lawyers, hospitals, public institutions and professionals.

Information Technology:

IT provides an enormous range of jobs, from software programming to IT consultancy. Large multinational and national firms are designing computer systems solutions to business problems. Large computer manufacturing firms (Microsoft/IBM) produce computer products and computer services and provide jobs to the candidates.

Business and industry: Computers and Information Technology are used for processing, storing and retrieval of data & information, duplicating. Communication systems such as the Fax, E- mail and web based e-commerce have emerged as powerful tools for business communication and business development.

Knowledge Management: Involves a very careful management of the existing knowledge-base in an organization, creating a mechanism to use the knowledge effectively, as and when required. IT tools have enabled organizations to create comprehensive and accurate accounts for the knowledge to be accessed by the authorized person.

Travel & Tourism: In the travel sector computerization has been used for ticketing, traffic control and communications, marketing and planning.

Designing: Software used in architectural planning and design is a significant development. Multimedia, CAD, CAM are used in communication and design.

Banking and financial institutions: Banking and financial institutions also use computers for maintaining, updating, computing financial data, and in the management and transfer of accounts. It is an important tool in financial planning and control.

Defense: Computers are being used extensively by the defense and protective services. Defense equipments have become technologically advanced. Hi tech (computerized) gadgets are used for combat, signals and communication.

Personal computers: The scope of the use of computers in households has transgressed to work related uses from home. The invasion of the ?office at home? is a popular example.

    which r the universities which provide M.S in computers within karnataka…..wat r entrance exam for tat…. how to apply for M.Sc in elec for mangalore uni……………where do i get pgcet MCA entrance model question papers………………please anyone reply for question to the above mentioned mail address

    i did not opt 4 comp & maths in class 12.
    i took phy,chem & bio.
    am i still eligible 2 pursue computers and IT?
    are there any colleges/universities which can admit me with these subjects in computers & IT?
