Merchant Navy - Study and Training 2010



Both public and private sector shipping companies have their major role in operating Indian Merchant Navy. These are maintained by experienced navigators crews and marine engineers. The development of manpower for Merchant Navy is in progress under the auspices of the University of Mumbai. It provide 3 year degree course B.Sc. in Nautical Sciences in this regard. Government of India had its full control over the training of personnel of Indian Navy.

Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI), formerly was known as The Directorate of Marine Engineering (DMET), is the best source for granting marine engineering education to the interested candidates.

Certification of Competency-Navigation

The certificate of competency relevant to the examinations of Masters’ and Mates in the Merchantile Marine is necessarily required by navigation officers under the rules and regulations in India. Second Mates(FG) certificate of competency is granted to those cadet officer who have completed their 1 year in the deck department on board a merchantship. The candidate is given earnings during his training period.

The candidates who have cleared the B.Sc. in Nautical Science, University of Mumbai are facilated to dimunition in sea service and also few exemptions are provided in the certificate of competency examinations.

From deck cadet to officer:

Merchant Navy can also be joined through pre-sea training with the help of private or government institutes. the candidates can be worked as deck cadets on board private national or international ships after completing their 12th class and pre-sea training.

Training for marine engineers:

Those candidates who have completed their training with Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI) can be recruited as engineers in Merchant Navy Vessels and they should have completed their mechanical or electrical engineering from the reputed university.
