Merchant Navy



Merchant navy is a fleet of ships which handles commercial trade and not involved in war situations. They transport cargo and sometimes even passengers by sea route. The fleet may include cargo liners, vessels, Special boats etc. In Merchant Navy, major tasks performed are in three basic areas of a ship. The Deck, the Engine and the Saloon Department

Indian merchant navy is operated by private and public sector companies. The government has the responsibility to train the personnel like crew member, navigators and engineers. The Ministry of Surface Transport is liable for it. ?Chanakya? This is the ship used for training. University of Mumbai offers 3 years Bsc. degree in marine engineering. There are two streams one is Navigation discipline, highest post is Master of ship for a navigation officer and second stream in Marine engineer the highest post is Chief Engineer

Certificates of Competency

Navigating officers -

For navigating officers two certificates are required .The first one is to qualify (Second Mate )from ?Chanakya?? now after 3 years successful training cadet is required to complete one more year of training in deck department? .The candidate becomes eligible for second mate after this training . A normal stipend is paid and who passes the Bsc from Mumbai University is eligible for posting in sea services

After the certificate of competency (Second mate FG) is obtained the officer can be appointed as 2nd office on board. For promotion he needs to tender his services .He also has to pass higher examination namely first mate. He is eligible for combined first mate/master after 18 months. And for master?s certificate he has to be there for 36 months .To become a captain it takes around 10-12 years

Training for marine engineers

Recruit engineers who have undergone training with Marine engineering research institute (MERI) when they are recruited they don?t have to give their Class II part A exam.??Examinations are conducted by the Ministry of Surface Transport in two parts ?A? and ?B?. Now when the training is complete the cadet is absorbed as junior engineer.

Medical Fitness ? The certificate of medical fitness is issued by the company?s doctor or by Merchant Marine Education and Research Trust (MMERT).

Direct Entry- Direct entry to merchant navy is also possible for students who have passed their 12th standard with physics chemistry maths can join as deck cadets.
