Mining Engineering Nature of Work & Employment Avenues
Nature of Work
Mining engineers
Mining engineering involves doing the following tasks for improvement in mining and the development of new operating and engineering methods.
Planning, Exploration
Mining entirely depends on geographical factors and the mineral to be extracted. Mining engineers have to study the nature of work for extraction of perfect deposits.
Designing
Mining technologists are involved in designing and supervision of the construction of mine shafts and tunnels in underground operations, and devise methods for transporting minerals to processing plants.
Excavation, Refining
Mining engineers usually specialize in the mining of one mineral, like the coal, gold, mica, etc for direct mineral processing operations and separating minerals from dirt, rocks and other unwanted materials mixed with it.
Research and development
Mining engineers also develop new equipment by ongoing Research and development program.
Environmental protection
Mining engineers also try to solve problems related to land reclamation and water and air pollution.
Sales
Mining engineers are employed as sales managers to market mining equipments and supplies.
Work Environment
Mining engineers have to work in the places where mineral deposits are identified and they are usually small and remote places. It will be a field work for the candidates.
Employment Avenues
The nationalization of mines and the National Mineral Policy confined job opportunities to public sector firms such as ONGC, Coal India Ltd., and National Mineral Development. The sector has also been opened to private companies in mineral exploration and extraction.
The mineral wealth of India is very rich and it is explored by various professionals in mining for extraction and processing purposes. Mining engineers are involved in location of valuable mineral deposits below the earth’s surface or water and are involved in extracting them in the most cost effective way and separating as much mineral as possible from lesser important admixtures. The commonest minerals are the energy minerals like coal, non metallic minerals such as limestone, and metallic minerals like the iron ore.
