Railways Engineering Nature of Work 2010



A team of engineering professionals from the focal branches of Engineering are maintained by Indian Railways. The Engineers have to supervise production units, production and expansion work, maintenance and also engineering services relevant to the working of the railways too.

Indian Railways grant the designation of Group’A’ personnel to Engineers. These posts are chosen for following 5 branches:

· Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME)

· Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE)

· Indian Railways Stores Service (IRSS)

· Indian Railway Service of Signal and Telecommunication Engineers (IRSSE)

· Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE)

Nature of Work

Engineers in Indian Railways have to go through a tough selection procedure and also planned training with organization. The engineers have to perform the following functions in all the above mentioned branches:

· Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME)

The work performed by Mechanical engineering is too tough as they have to keep update themselves with the detail of Diesel Locomotives and rolling stock of the railways. They have to keep complete record of the proper availability of wagons, locomotives and carriages.

· Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE)

The engineers relevant to this branch are termed as Civil Engineers for Indian Railways. The function performed by these engineers are construction of railway stations, tunnels, bridges, planning of the routes and also construction of house colonies.

· Indian Railways Stores Service (IRSS)

This branch keeps an account of entire expenditure made on acquirement of materials. The branch of Indian railways does not only spent on plan expenditure but also on materials required for maintainenace purpose.

· Indian Railway Service of Signal and Telecommunication Engineers (IRSSE)

This branch is handled by Engineers having specialization in Signals and Telecommunication as the train movement totally depends on signals and communication networks.

· Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE)

The main function of Electrical Engineers in Indian Railways is to keep an eye on maintenance and repair of Electrical Locomotives and also coaches of the train.
