Textile Designing
Textiles and yarns is one of the upcoming industry which focus on making of many kinds of garments, furnishings, carpets, towels, lace, net, embroidery, etc. Fabrics can be woven, knitted or printed. Designers have to specialize in designing fabric for men?s suit, ladies? dress or furnishing fabrics.
Textile designing is a very technical subject which includes the combination of different methods for production of traditional textures, dyes and the modern market needs. The textile designer must have knowledge of yarn making, weaving, knitting, dyeing and finishing processes, including the knowledge of different types of looms, knitting machines, printing processes including block, stencil, roller and silk-screens. Textile designing covers both surface design and structural design.
Nature of Work
Textile designing is concerned primarily with fabrics. Textile designers must be trained in fabric printing, dyeing, embroidery and design development to be anyone of these; design developers, color specialists, hand painters and printing supervisors.
Textile designers use their basic knowledge about the properties and qualities of textiles before they turn their design ideas to reality and to increase the production of the textile industry according to the current demands of the market.
Work Environment
Textile designers work with colors, dyes and varied materials while designing. They have to work for long hours while creating samples and designs in which most of the time is spent in the design studio. Textile designers often study fashion trends, textile history and design concepts before working on new designs. This requires working in libraries, visit to special regions and areas.
Employment Avenues
Job opportunities for textile designer is in design studios, textile mills, export houses, in textile dyeing and printing units as well as in fashion garment houses and export units. Designers can freelance on assignments for both government and private firms. Textile designers also have scope for employment in textile manufacturing industries.
